Not only that, but what does iwconfig wlan0 say?  It should say "wlan0
No such device".  Also, don't trust the wifi blue light: on models
with bluetooth, the light serves as an indicator for both bluetooth and
wifi -- if bluetooth isn't toggled off, when you toggle wifi off the
light will remain on.
