It works for me, with the same machine and same OS.  It might be some 
setting that is wrong.  I did have trouble with it when I first set up 
Skype, but now it works fine.  So, what did I do?  No real clue, but 
under sound preferences in the Gnome desktop I have ALSA selected, which 
may not have been the original setting.  Everything else looks pretty 
standard, but you can check with me about any other settings.

I've only used the internal mike --- and I only use it for Skype.
