Thanks for your reply, but my problem is that the screen turns off. No 
light at all. Your problem sounds unrelated.

I have already tried that (sorry for forgetting to mention this in the
original mail). Pressing "random" keys makes the harddrive led flash
for a few second, but no other indication of anything happening.
Swtiching to a console or killing X with ctrl+alt+backspace does not 
help.
