Oh, I have had the fix unofficially for some time here: 
http://debian.jones.dk/pkg/sugar/abiword/

The actual change can be isolated by comparing the .diff.gz file against 
the related official .diff.gz using interdiff -z.

But good news nonetheless that you've gained more packaging knowledge.

Ah, now I remember: newer releases depend on pybox2d. The underlying 
box2d have been packaged, and after waiting some time for pybox2d I 
recently got in touch with the guy intending to package it who had since 
lost interest, so handing it over to me.  He warned that packaging of 
box2d in his opinion was problematic - I have not yet experienced if I 
agree.

So no need to fix anything upstream - except perhaps to make pybox2d 
optional only.
