Notice that the pure64 userland is rumored (by the ibm linux folk) to be way
slower than a similar 32bit userland (some say by about 30% or so).

For details of how to install debian with a ppc64 kernel on this kind of
machine. It is currently partly broken, but i will update it next week, and as
soon as the debian toolchain maintainers find time to build the biarch
toolchain, the debian-installer will support it by default.

The 2.6.12 kernels will be ppc64 only for all 64bit flavours (old power3/4
will be replaced by a single pseries flavour).

Installing the above mentioned kernel packages over an existing 32bit install
will work flawlessly.
