I had thought that the discussion was winding down, but
there seem to remain one or two points people want to
discuss. This is well. This discussion is worth
spending the time on.

Justin's last message indirectly raises such a point.
The last draft has latex, gcc and perl all as
applications. However, perl is very often used as a
better sed---such usage is not merely incidental; it is
secondary but quite normal---yet sed is a utility. Does
this make perl also a utility?

On the other hand, perl is quite capable of transforming
data in "intricate or highly nonobvious ways." Such
usage is normal. However, "perl -e" is often used in
processing chains for simple, straightforward, obvious
transformations.

Perhaps perl is like imagemagick. Maybe it is both an
application and a utility. However, python is not
really a utility, is it?

Who can make sense of this?
