Hi,
there are a lot of raster image tools that you best use with limited
colors only.
Like all these in netpbm, they are not really useful for photos.
But basically you can, yes.

It's the old dilemma again, of being technically-objective (and not
making a distinction), or trying to guess what a human might be
looking for. ;-)
Better not make both photo and rasterimage, but stick to ri only.
