The complete answer is somewhat complicated---but in
brief, at a U.S. or Canadian university, nine years:

  * four years to complete the bachelor's degree,

  * two more years to complete the master's degree,
    and

  * yet three more years to complete the Ph.D.

As an important exception, at the most prestigious
universities like Erich's Berkeley, the Ph.D. normally
takes an extra year, for a total of ten.
