I do agree that they differ in their typical usage.
The question is whether we can find a clear way to distinguish them.

Every IRC client I know has DCC support. Not every DNS server nstx support.

Oh and btw: linphone (SIP phone) has a buddy list.
Where would you place skype (if it were floss) - is it an IM or a
phone application?
By "common use" it would be a phone application, but it has almost
everything ICQ has, hasn't it?
