This is weird.  Do you remember the exact error?

See bug #289446.  This was worked around in latest crosshurd (1.7.6 as of now).

We'd have to put it in the tarball, but in some situations it's a security
problem since the default root account is password-less (untill you set it up).

Also the tarball should only contain the minimal set of packages for you to
install anything else you want.
