Were you using the default kernel shipped with Debian GNU/kFreeBSD when you did
this test?  If so, then it's probably a config file as you say.

What happens if you mv /etc to a backup dir, and copy the FreeBSD /etc into /?
(beware, system won't boot untill you put the correct /etc back)
