[Gnome22-user] GNOME 2.2 ESD Expects Devices in /dev/sound When Running Kernel 2.6 Only

All,

I've been testing kernel version 2.6 from http://www.backports.org.
I've found that when I boot 2.6 and start GNOME 2.2, it complains about
the absence of a device, /dev/sound/mixer. I don't even have a sound
directory in /dev, and so am wondering what it is about the kernel that
would cause this behavior. Is there script I should run to create
device files in /dev/sound? I've already got sound device files (such
as /dev/dsp), created by the ALSA snddevices script. Am I missing
something here? How can I tell GNOME ESD to use my existing devices,
and not expect to find them in /dev/sound? Alternatively, how can I
create equivalent device nodes in /dev/sound to what I've already
created in /dev?

Any suggestions proffered would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Michael
