I believe that, I just did quick "out of the box" tests. Besides 
switching between ISO-8859-1 and UTF-8 gets old pretty quick (like it 
did with HTTP a few years ago).

I have a Debian Frankenstein system with mixed packages between Testing 
and Experimental. The UMN gopher client came from Testing it seems.
