Ok, that worked. http://hostname:70 is a pretty ugly hack, tho. And I'm
not aware of any servers that can do it _already_.

So I believe, "CGI already works fine with gopher" is a major
overstatement.

"HTTP POST to hacked gopher server" works. That is not CGI over
gopher at all :)
