Hi NN:
Dunno, but here goes my opinion:
* Gopher, as a TCP/IP application layer protocol , it has its own port
dedicated ( useful if you dare to play with iptables ).
* To me, is more organized, in the aspect to classify and present your
documents ( no distraction), and the read-only ability ( if wanted ).
* Serving as a publishing tool, gopher is quite useful (think of
presenting and sharing news, receipts, research papers, et al ).
* Think also of multimedia content or the old CD-ROM support: work
like that but at a minimum.
* The way it works from server to server (proxies ), is also unique.
At least but not last: You have no obligation to user the Gopher, if it
does not fit your purposes ;)
