hmmm debianutils woody 1.16.2woody1 has an -p switch,
it mentioned in it's manpage:
$ mktemp -p /tmp example.XXXXXXXXXX || echo bla
/tmp/example.XXXXUZXcj1
$ cat /etc/debian_version 
3.0

could you please verify if the mktemp you are using is from aboves
package?
