ok, just compiled tabterm.  seems ok for v0.01.

some very lame timing tests, running "time ls -l /usr/lib":

multi-gnome-terminal (264 columns x x86 lines, font
"-schumacher-clean-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-c-*-koi8-r"):

real    0m0.327s
user    0m0.064s
sys 0m0.088s


tabterm (227 columns x 74 lines, font "fixed 11"):

real    0m6.002s
user    0m0.036s
sys 0m0.068s

it seems significantly faster.  0.327s vs 6.002s.  about 18x faster.

BTW, these timing tests were performed on a machine with a Dell 2407 24"
LCD, with subpixel smoothing enabled.
