Well with libvirt 0.9.12 and I just managed to start and stop virtualbox
machines.

I have seen a very detailed table API showing which API call was
implemented on which hypervisor, and really few calls were implemented
vor Virtualbox (IIRC  the storage creation API calls were not
implemented for VirtualBox, hard to create a VM without that)

I can't find that page anymore, but it was on the libvirt site.
To the best of my knowledge, libvirt is great for KVM, fine for LXC and
Xen, other hypervisors have just basic functionalities implemented.
