quick question: have you tried to contact upstream (github issues)
seeking his output on either he would be interested to make this steps
optional/better controlled/etc?  May be resolution is just a simple
patch/pull request  away?

in my experience he (Patrick?) was quite responsive and open.

indeed interesting... if you looked at our script -- it is based on
firing up simple http server to provide any needed file including
preseeding one.
