Ok so let's start to work on it in a different way.

Please, rebase your working patch against master and put your work on
an Alioth user tree so we all can start to check it and comment on it.

However, I'd like to see if we can't split your patch in logical
parts:

 - <implementation of it>
 - <change old code to use it>
 - ...
