If that feature is missing, I say it's no big deal. Better add support
for ControlSocket these days, since that's easier to deal with and
enabled by default in the tor Debian package IIRC.

/usr/share/tor/tor-service-defaults-torrc reads:

CookieAuthentication 1
CookieAuthFileGroupReadable 1
CookieAuthFile /var/run/tor/control.authcookie

So indeed that should work... unless you lack access to /var/run/tor,
of course, and unless you've overriden these bits of the
configuration locally.

But again, IMO in 2015 we should aim at supporting ControlSocket
better, and not bother too much with cookie or password auth.
