What did you download and run? I need the exact details, otherwise I
can't test it myself.

I did find http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/install/index.html
This installer is rather broken. I wouldn't personally trust it. If
you must run it, run in "manual" mode.

I would recommend that you either:

1) Download and build the source code by hand. This is all the
installer script is doing, and will be rather more trustworthy than
a script that keeps asking for your root password. It will also
tell you where things go wrong so that we can do something about
   it.

  or

2) Install the official "hplip" package provided by Debian. This is
the one we expect our users to use. Is there any reason why you
can't use this? Just "apt-get install hplip".

What you did, and the exact error are needed here.

The new version went into etch yesterday. Both the -dev and the
library package migrate at the same time, so the inconsistency should
not occur. Perhaps the installer is depending on a specific version?

No. However, it is expected that users will use the packages provided
by Debian instead of building their own, for the most part. But,
--force-deps should *never* *ever* be used. If you need to use it,
it's a sign that you need to fix the real problem instead of asking
the system to ignore it.

Cool.

And to you!
