tar --strip-components=1 -xavf …origfile… is your friend there. Then standard 
debuild.

No problem, you're right. I hesitated to do that in the first place but opted 
to only mirror the bzr repository.

I have now push just that, from the squeeze security release (branch master-
squeeze), through the changes targetted at wheezy (master-wheezy) up to the 
changes for experimental (master). pristine-tar and upstream branches as 
usual.
