Transitional packages take care of that rather easily, without any breakage.

It really is just a question of choice.  I don't think it is a good idea to
have the packages using different naming schemes, though.  It is more
confusing to the user.  And chances are we *want* people going from sarge to
etch to switch to 2.2 anyway...

I have nothing against it.  But I don't trust alioth mailinglists very much,
I fear we could end up missing some imporant emails because alioth was on
the fritz or somesuch.
