Now that you have commit access, perhaps you can update the Debian
version to get closer to the upstream one?

I am happy enough with the git-buildpackage import-orig mechanism, and
do not really see the need for merging the git histories, but have
nothing against it either, as long as 'gbp buildpackage keep working. :)
