Hmm, so the "missing" piece is actually there...

I have no clue what is going on -- does somebody familiar with Python in
Windows read this?

I have never used Python xy myself, maybe that causes the problem
(although I doubt it). Could you try installing a python 2.6 from
python.org -- just to check whether there is something fundamentally
wrong with the pynifti package?
