I don't support the admin changing /var, sorry. Nor do I support him
changing the +x flag on /usr/bin/fetchmail. That will be overriden
between package upgrades, *exactly* as it would have been would this
directory be shipped in the package files.

That's incorrect, the SVN has the later since yesterday:
