I couldn't reproduce it on sid either (I did a purge etc.)
I have a feeling purging will solve your problems. You could try these commands:

apt-get remove --purge firebird-server-common libfirebird-s32 firebird-s32-server

It will also uninstall dependencies like php4-interbase, be carefull if you can't
reinstall any of them easily. You will also lose your user security database.

If this doen't help, could you try these
commands and note there output in your reply?

dpkg -l *firebird*
dpkg -S /etc/init.d/firebird
