Hey guys,

I managed to recover all my hardware after the storms, which left me
without a server and a desktop, and no convenient access to my mail.

As I told kyle I imported freeciv-sound-standard to SVN. I found the
correspondence I have with the Danish sound guys, good luck to whoever
starts the big job on finding sound authors to get them relicensed.

Hi Martin!

I just came across your website while working with the freeciv sound
set.

I guess you know the Freeciv people (www.freeciv.org) are using some
samples from your website to provide sound effects to the wonderful
Civilization clone.

I'm the Debian maintainer of Freeciv, and I'm doing a Debian package
with sounds for our users. As you may know, Debian is one of the few
GNU/Linux distributions composed only of Free Software, so we need to
care a lot about what material we include in our ftp site.

And here is my concern: under what license are the samples in
waveform.dk? Debian needs to ensure that a few freedom properties are
respected by the license: right to copy, redistribute, modify and
redistribute derived works, in short.
You can get the full list of requirements at
http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines.

If this criteria is met by the stuff in waveform.dk it'd be great.

Thanks,
Jordi

Hi Jordi.

Actually nothing is under any official license.

People who put up the samples 'agree' that they can be freely used by
anyone, as written on the disclaimer page.

Wether anyone who has put up samples has the legal right to sue others is
hard for me to say (I certainly don't hope so), but then again, they
shouldn't have put it on the website for others to download if their
intentions are to annoy people. On the other hand I do not want anyone to
upload copyrighted samples, but that's quite hard to manage, ofcourse I'd
remove anything if I knew it was under a license of some sort.

>From my personal point of view those samples can be used by anyone,
including your project(s), and I'm especially glad that my website can
serve the Linux community.

Maybe I should have choosen some kind of licence, but I didn't bother at
the time I made this site.

Hopes this clears things up a little.

Kind regards,

Martin Krois.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your kind reply :)

Yeah, the problem with "free use" is that it doesn't specify how freely
you can use stuff. In the Linux world we say "Is it free beer or free
speech" to differenciate the two meanings. I assume you're refering to
free speech, which would give users right to use, modify and
redistribute the files, as long as the author credits are preserved, you
don't pretend you created the stuff, etc. (these are the basic freedoms
in free software).
If my assumption is wrong, please say so :)

Well, having a license is not bad :) It's bad when it's a restrictive
license. I would actually like to see some license in your website,
similar to what I said above. You might want to google for "BSD
license", and see if you like that model. It's a small, easy to
understand license which gives lots of freedom to users. Having a more
explicit terms of use in the website (which material uploaders could see
when uploading files) would be helpful to avoid people having the same
questions like me.

Thanks.

It's not late, for the newly uploaded material. It'd be nice to have
one.

I'll contact individually the authors of the samples that are being used
by freeciv, to see if they would accept licensing them under a free
license. I'll mail you the results, so you can have more info about the
material you're hosting, too.

Thanks again,
Jordi

Yes, I might utilize a license of that sort in a near future. Currently
I'm very busy sadly, and have not had any time to update anything on the
site. :\

I hope the authors give you permission :)
