[pkg-fso-maint] [debian] usb networking dead after upgrade

i upgraded about an hour ago, and after a reboot, usb networking was gone.
after an hour of research i did as a desperate attempt
om usb mode device
and there it was.
simple question: what happend? why wasn't the usb not set to device mode
after a reboot?
on a related not, fsousaged did not start -- having access back, i am
going to investigate.
the following packages were involved in the upgrade, although i doubt,
