I'm more familiar with git and it's what the rest of the pkg-fso
packages use. So I'd go with git. I think we just have to try how it
works out with git-svn. 

Do you have some webspace where you can push your git repository to?
Would it be acceptable to push the repository to pkg-fso? 

There were plans last summer to convert the d-i repository to git. But
it was stalled at some point waiting for input from some key
contributors. :-(

I usually use picocom. This sounds like your using the wrong speed. With
picocom you have key combinations to switch between different speeds. 

OTOH the cables break easily. If you suspect a broken
cable just write to openmoko and the will send you a bunch of new ones
for free (at least they sent me some free cables).
