Well, packages that don't need it can use either of course and having to 
define an "|" in that case is somewhat annoying. And you'd have to 
specify the "|" as otherwise you could conflict with other packages that 
do depend on the xdm variant.

Packages that _do_ need it would of course have to explicitly depend on 
the variant with xdm support.
