The problem remains exactly the same in the latest version (1.6.10-4.3)
available in unstable. It still times out while rasterizing a page. It
still hangs indefinitely in /usr/lib/hplip/ui/waitform.py when you try
to kill the hung process.

There is no hplip 2.x in unstable at this time. Are you referring to
some other package?
