You will need to install the printer using HPLIP's software.

There is more to it than simply substituting hp: for parallel:.

HPLIP changed the way it does things a little while ago, it sounds like 
some older info has been messing with our idea of what state the system 
is or should be in.

If you have the hplip-doc package installed you should look at:
	/usr/share/doc/hplip-doc/HTML/setup.html
then try one of those methods of setting up the printer.

Keep in mind the info at the HPLIP site may assume you have build HPLIP 
yourself and refer to things which Debian has done for you behind the 
scenes.
