Bug reported at launchpad/ubuntu: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/iso-codes/+bug/267513

The text string "Greek, Modern (1453-)" in the translated el.po files should be only "Ελληνικά", not "Ελληνικά, Σύγχρονα".

~/Desktop/iso-codes-3.16$ grep -lri "Σύγχρονα" */el.po
iso_639/el.po
iso_639_3/el.po

~/Desktop/iso-codes-3.16$ grep -ri "Σύγχρονα" */el.po
iso_639/el.po:msgstr "Ελληνικά, Σύγχρονα"
iso_639_3/el.po:msgstr "Ελληνικά, Σύγχρονα"

Message sent to Konstantinos Margaritis, Athanasios Lefteris

Hello Kostas, Athanasios,

We (iso-codes maintainers) have a pending bug report in our bug
tracker, against the greek translation of the ISO-639 standard.

The bug submitter complains that the entry for "Greek, Modern (1453-)"
is literaly translated as "Ελληνικά, Σύγχρονα". I guees, this means
"Greek, modern".

He suggests the entry to be translated as "Ελληνικά" (Greek) alone.

We don't want to take this decision alone and interfere with your work
without asking you.

It is true that the situation of the Greek language in the standard is
a bit strange as it is the only language where the "modern" variant is
explicitely called "modern". This does not happen for other languages
(however, those do not also have the "Ancient" counterpart listed in
the standard, which may explain).

As French translator, I kept with the standard and translated the
entry to "grec moderne (après 1453)". So did all other translators I
checked with.

But, still, you might want to follow the suggestion. After all, this
is about *your* language's translation..:)

Awaiting for your answer.... Many thanks in advance.

Thank you for your quick reply.

It is debatable, however it is well known among the Greeks that Greek language is a continuously improved language, not separated by eras. The ISO standard has separated it in order to easily distinguish the differences and that is justified for the sake of standardization.

Since "Greek, Modern" is actually the "Greek" that is spoken nowadays, it is a bit irrational in my opinion to include the "Modern" part. The main reason it was suggested is because greeks will look for "Greek", not for "Greek, Modern" in the Language selector of gnome. Otherwise it creates confusion and disparity.

You mentioned the French translation as an argument. We asked for the Greek translation to be altered, since it affects only the greek-speaking community. The French and other language translations should not be affected by this proposal.

You also mentioned that we could bring this to the ISO standard for a change. I doubt they'll listen to us, but we would like to bring the change where it matters most to us, the translation of the greek el.po.

I eagerly await the reply of the greek translator. :)

Message:
This proposal is debatable. The standard says "Greek (Modern)" so translating this to the greek equivalent and keep "modern" seems fair. We need to get the advice of the original translator.
