This is probably the best think to do.

At any rate, I just noticed that you have closed Bug#425424.  We can only
merge it with #425417 if we either reopen #425424 or if we also close
#425417.

My understanding of it is that Günter wished to get the problem documented
somewhere, such that users can be informed about the problem.  What about
putting a note in NEWS.Debian (or README.Debian, I am not sure which one)
about this.  Something along these lines:

   Note that the jed and xjed packages would present a bug [1] in some cases
   when they are built against version previous to 2.0.7 of the slang2
   library.  The current version of jed and xjed in the unstable Debian
   distribution should not present this problem, but you should be careful
   when replacing the official Debian package from third-party sources or
   when rebuilding it against libslang2 2.0.6.
