Last week we have had an email server breakdown. After two days kmail had to process some thousand emails... I appreciate that this might take a long time, but it lasted very, very long... and the most annoying thing was that I wasn't able to edit and send any email during a couple of hours! AISI in daily use in business this is a k.o. for kmail as a business application.

My suggestions: Fetching and filtering of newly received mails should be a two step process, where fetched mails should be stored in a temporary but accessible folder and moved to their actual destination in a second step. And much more important, receiving and editing/sending of mails shold be decoupled unconditionally.
