Just to keep you up-to-date: The solution for this problem will be the new storage backend Akonadi that we'll introduce with KDE 4.

As for the last comment: In business all mail should be checked for being spam or containing virusses on the mail server. Since it's spamassassin which is causing most of the pain checking mail already on the server would make using spamassassin via KMail unnecessary and thus considerably ease the pain this bug is causing you.
