I can confirm the foregoing for use of disconnected imap with KMail 1.9.5 on KDE 3.5.5. (standard Arch Linux KDE packages). I noticed my inbox was reduced from 1500 mails yesterday to 144 tonight. Fortunately, mails on the server get backed up on a daily basis so I was able to request a restore. 

I hope the bug will be fixed soon, because KMail is a joy to use (but without this kind of "fun" ;-)
