[pkg-kolab] etch packages - saslauthd configuration problem

I installed the kolab packages on a virgin etch machine according to
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-kolab/kolabd/trunk/debian/README.Debian?op=file&rev=0&sc=0

but it goes wrong in step 3.3 ...

Debian-40-etch-32-LAMP:/etc# testsaslauthd -u manager -p credativ
0: NO "authentication failed"

it seems to be the same problems as in this post :

anyone know what the problem might be ?
