At least I think that these bugs are not that many but well I can understand
the reasoning for this wish.
I'm thinking about turning assertions off for the 1.4.4 package.
What would be more important is a decision if we'd like to see the change
aswell in the 1.4.3 package which will be released with etch in about (oh
I better don't bet on a release date again) ^aeh soon.

If we'd like to see the change for etch aswell this bugs needs a priority
upgrade with a good reasoning behind it.
IMHO the upstream docs clearly say that it's a feature for development and
not for end users so I personally find that a reason good enough to turn it
off.

Comments for or against this plan?
