we decided to switch from the always enabled assertions back
to the upstream default which will be disabled for stable releases.
This means that the problem should be resolved with the next
package upload but that might take some time incl. the migration of
the package to testing.
Beside of that I forwarded your report to the upstream Bugzilla.
