Well, obviously, if you did not have the permission to read the file in question
(which depends on you having the execute permission on all parent directories),
you cannot expect LyX to be able to read the file. Is that the case? Can you
read the file using e.g. "less"?
On the other hand, LyX definitely shouldn't crash because of it. We have had a
similar bug reported earlier.
