I am the maintainer of xdg-utils in Debian, although I haven't been
doing my job properly for quite some time.

My experience is that the code in xdg-utils is very poor, especially the
code that is run in non-desktop environments. Apparently upstream wants
to avoid as many dependencies as possible, which results in them trying
to do everything in the shell, resulting in numerous bugs. Writing
robust and secure shell scripts is quite difficult. So I'm sceptical.

xdg-utils works fine under a desktop environment, though.
