It might help to play a bit with our BTS and try to reassign the bug to
bash if we notice that dash or even say tcsh do not show this behaviour.
I would not do this without any explaining comment that we not
shamelessly try to get rid of this bug but just need some input from
bash experts.  No idea whether this might work.

This more or less marks the end of my active C programming.  Not that I
would not have loved this - my tasks just had changed more to SQL and
script languages calling SQL statements ...
