1.7.1 is packaged in Debian. 1.8.x should come soon in experimental and
go into unstable when Etch is released.

I guess Ubuntu is shipping a very slightly modified version of the
Debian version, as there was no such package in Ubuntu when we started
the one in Debian. I guess this is safe to upgrade to a Debian one, even
if a few minor things may have been changed in the Ubuntu package (we
got no contribution from Ubuntu, so i don't know what they could be).

You'd probably better check the difference between the Ubuntu and Debian
version, but be sure the Debian package is running well.
