You could eventually try mesa 6.5.2 packages that are in experimental.

Also, which xserver-xorg-core are you running? 1.1.1-17 or so? You're
running plain etch/testing?

Please send us the output of "/usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 3>&1"
(or at least your xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files) so that we have
details about your hardware and software.

Does XAA instead of EXA change anything?

I guess disabling composite won't change anything, but you could try
just in case...

Could you clarify "recently"? If you running plain testing/etch, an
approximative date might help us locate the problematic package upgrade.
Looking at /var/log/dpkg/log might help to.
