Adding the following line to /etc/security/limits.conf:
* soft as 2400000
* hard as 3600000

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?
Raing the limits does allow the problem to fester longer but smaller values can cause Firefox to fail to even initialize

   * What was the outcome of this action?
This bug report

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
That the software doesn't consume 4GB of Memory to display a 1MB image
