OK, well then acpi=off will have to remain in effect. I need the modem,
no question about that. But I can't seem to get any APM functionality out
of this kernel. The stock kernel config file seems to indicate that APM is
present, and the kernel accepts the boot parameter "apm=on", but I don't
seem to be able to get it to do anything -- not even power the machine off
with "shutdown -h now". Short of compiling a custom kernel, which I really
don't have the disk space for, do you have any suggestions? It seems to me
that the old sarge 2.6.8 kernel that I custom built would do this.

I realize that technically this is beyond the scope of this bug report,
but the requirement to get the internal modem working, which is after all
the whole purpose of this package, forces acpi=off. And that in turn
raises the issue of how to get apm to work. A laptop with no power management
is not a good thing.

Again, I am using the stock Debian Lenny kernel, 2.6.26-1-686.
