Oh, man!  Do I ever feel stupid!  I can't believe I didn't notice that!

CONFIG_ACPI=y
.
.
.
CONFIG_APM=m

ACPI is compiled into the kernel, but APM is modularized!  Of course!
Why I didn't notice the difference between the y and the m I don't know.
What a newbie mistake!  The Lord has his ways of keeping me humble,
doesn't he?

I loaded the apm module and that solved the problem.  Thanks.

You may close this bug report at your convenience.  Thanks for all
your help.  Unfortunately, it's too late for these changes to make Lenny.
But the problems in the production version can be fixed by the user,
with proper instructions.  Once I get everything running to my satisfaction,
I'm going to try to make a web page on the ThinkPad site, as you
suggested earlier.  Thanks again!
